How to Make Brushing Fun for Kids

Two kids brushing their teeth.

Good dental hygiene is a necessity for everyone, especially children. However, convincing a child to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. So, how do we turn their frowns upside down and make brushing fun?

Read on to learn some creative and practical ways.

Turn It into a Game

Children love games, so why not turn brushing into a fun activity? There are multiple ways to do this, but here are our suggestions.

You can create a brushing chart in which your child earns a sticker each time they brush their teeth. They can receive a small reward after collecting a certain number of stickers. This makes the chore exciting and instills a sense of achievement in them.

Another recommendation is to use a timer that runs for exactly two minutes, which is the recommended time for brushing. The closer they get to the timer, the more points they will get for that day. You could also give them the option to cash in the points they have accumulated for a prize. This makes the process entertaining and rewarding for the kids while keeping their dental health in check.

Brush Together as a Family

Brushing your teeth together as a family can become a shared activity for children. This will also be an opportunity for you to demonstrate good technique and show your child that brushing is an important and regular habit.

Explain Its Importance

Children are naturally curious and often respond well when they understand the reasons behind activities and routines. Explain to them why brushing is important, using simple language. Talk about how brushing helps keep their teeth strong and prevents cavities. Show them pictures of healthy and unhealthy teeth so that they understand the consequences of not brushing properly. You can also make the connection between brushing and having a bright, healthy smile as an added motivator.

Use Songs and Rhymes

Songs and rhymes can make any chore more enjoyable for kids. You can create a special song to sing together while brushing or choose one of the many rhymes available online. These songs also often include a two-minute timer, making it easy for children to brush for the recommended amount of time.

Make It a Story

Anything can be a storytelling opportunity, including brushing. Make up a fun narrative in which your child’s toothbrush is a superhero fighting evil cavity monsters. This imaginative approach can make brushing seem more like an adventure rather than a chore. Each day, you can continue the story, highlighting the importance of thorough brushing in the fight against cavities.

By incorporating these fun plans, you can transform brushing from a daily battle into a positive and healthy habit your child will enjoy. With a little creativity and patience, your child can have a lifetime of healthy smiles.
